Charles Beaumont Phipps was born in Mulgrave Castle Yorkshire, Educated at Harrow he joined the army retiring from active service in 1851. He served the Royal household firstly as equerry to Queen Victoria and then in 1847 as private Secretary to the Prince Consort. He went on to hold other royal appointments.
